Sailing Resume for Dan Ohlemacher

I learned to sail at the age of 9 (1966) when our family purchased an Islander 32' sailboat. With this boat we enjoyed many weekends sailing from San Pedro to Catalina Island. I practiced sailing with our 8' Sabot dingy in Cat Harbor and quickly became proficient. A few years later our family upgraded to an Alaskan '46 twin screw trawler. Over a period of ten years (1972-1982) we made scores of voyages from our homeport of Marina del Rey. We cruised to the Channel Islands, including Catalina, Santa Barbara, Ana Cappa, & Santa Cruz Island, and to ports such as Dana Point and San Diego bay. Under my parent's supervision I operated our yacht in all capacities, including helm watch, maneuvering into harbors and anchoring.

Upon graduating college (1979-1982), I purchased my first sailboat, a Hobie 18, and enjoyed sailing numerous local spots in southern California such as Long Beach, Cardiff State Beach, Mission Bay and San Diego Bay. A few years later (1980-1983) I was fortunate to make two trips to the Virgin Islands where I sailed Island Magic, a 31' sloop, in and about St. Thomas, St. John and Norman Island.

In 2003, I joined the Harbor Sailing Club on Harbor Island to formalize my sailboat training taking the ASA certified training courses. I also chartered from the club on numerous occasions for day sailing on boats varying from 22 to 32 feet.

In early 2005, I owned and operated Dreamline, a San Juan 24 sailboat which we keep in Chula Vista Marina, and enjoyed day sailing in San Diego bay.

In July 2005, I purchased a Catalina 42 sailboat and for the 4 years cruised around San Diego with countless day trips in the open ocean, and dozens of over nights trips to with stops in Newport, Oceanside, Dana Point, Two Harbors, Avalon, Puerto Salina BC, and Ensenada.

In Spring of 2009, I cruised up the west coast of the USA from Ensendada Mexico to Anacortes Washington. Over 75% of this trip I accomplished single handed.

In all of my boating experience there has never been any incidence of loss or damage to property or vessels and there has never been any incidence of injury to crew or passengers.
